Here is why:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWe started from the 2017 AXIS Limited outline, channels, rocker and FAT rail.\u003cbr\u003e While we maintained the outline which has proved itself the past 3 years, we wanted to create a brand new base shape and a totally redesigned thickness flow. The base retains the key features that our riders loved in 2017, but we dialed them back by 70%, which reduces drag on the water. The new base makes the board even faster and more stable, while the tracking and smoothness of the ride are also improved.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e Beneath the surface of the 100% biaxial carbon fibre top and bottom is a solid Paulownia wood core. A 12mm wall makes for a stronger rail that tracks and releases beautifully, while carefully placed uni-directional carbon controls flex at the tips, becoming progressively stiffer towards the centre.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e For the 2019 AXIS Limited board, the rails are thinner than the FAT rail from 2017.\u003cbr\u003e On the original carbon Limited from 2015, we had quite thin rails which made the board a bit nervous and super responsive.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e By switching to the FAT rail in 2016, we gave to the Limited board unparalleled smoothness in choppy conditions. Although the 2016-2017 Limited was much better in choppy conditions we felt that sometimes the board missed some of the original crispness. Mostly in flat water conditions.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The thickness flow of the overall 2019 Limited board is the same as the year before, but a much more even thickness rail to rail. This gives a more predictable flex without point loading the laminate, which results in a stronger board. We have achieved this by studying the bending moments of various sections and comparing them from the original Limited 2015, to FAT rail 2016-17 to the new 2018 Limited board.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e By scaling back the rail thickness, we created an incredible balance of smooth ride and crisp tracking. He realized that when kiting, he is either really far forward on the board for going upwind fast or he is all the way back on the board for smacking lip. The wide point of this board is slightly more forward than usual and what this does is allow the rider to have a stance that is more centered on the board. He found that having a centered stance really helps to keep the board on his feet because of rotating around the halfway mark of the board rather than having a lot more nose volume to swing around.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The rails on the back half of the board are fairly parallel which makes lightwind kiting and going upwind easier as well as gives the board a lot of drive to power through chop. Sebastian kept the tail pretty narrow instead of keeping it wide like a lot of the modern plaining hull designs nowadays. Having a narrow tail is crucial for wave kiting because it allows the rider to stall the board and stay in the pocket of the wave. With kiting as opposed to surfing, there are so many more forces involved. When you are kiting and you drop into a wave your apparent wind effecting the kite dramatically increases due the increased velocity gained form the wave. So really if it is blowing 20knts a lot of the time it feels like you are overpowered when on the wave because your apparent wind is more like 30knts over the kite. So by keeping the tail of the board narrow, this allows the rider to step on the tail, stall the board and achieve a more manageable apparent wind.\u003cbr\u003e So much went into nailing down the construction of this board. We are very picky about having a board that is light and flexy enough for airs because if it is too heavy or stiff we won’t be able to land a lot of the tricks. Something Sebastian thinks it is necessary in a strapless board to have a light foam under your feet. The light foam compresses perfectly, and seems to keep the board on your feet. The issue is that with light foam come weaker more fragile boards. The bank is a light EPS foam with 2 strips of high density foam running all along the stringer. This construction provides the positive attributes of light EPS and takes the advantage of the deck shape in order to maximize breaking resistance.\u003cbr\u003e The deck has pre-shaped heel dents which not only are insane for keeping the board on your feet in the air but really allow the impact forces to be channeled through the stringers and fibers rather than compressing the foam and buckling the board. It as the hammock concept; with this deck shape there are 2 hammocks of fiber that your heels land into and absorb the force evenly throughout the fibers. The layup on the Climax is fiberglass and InnegraTech cloth. The Innegra is awesome because it is super flexy and really increases the breaking resistance of the fiberglass. They actually use Innegra in applications like riot shields.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e We decided to use the AXIS surf honeycomb fins. They are made differently than your regular fins and feel awesome.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The AXIS Climax works well for the kind of riding we do because of its ability to excel in all conditions. AXIS has designed dedicated strapless freestyle boards and wave boards but Sebastian still finds himself taking the Climax out in all conditions. We made the mast section as high performance as possible (stiff as hell and with a refined NACA section foil so it’s not going to be slow) and wanted to make a 100% carbon mast that would allow us to add more serious race wings to it in the future as we are working on that as well (all our wings are 100% carbon). That’s why we added a kick tail on the back of the board so you always know how far your rear foot is, as well as use it for those surf and transition carving moves.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFinally, the AXIS Kink 45 Carbon comes complete with the AXIS super flexible and strong foil straps, which were designed from scratch specifically for foiling. The front strap is AXIS’ proprietary one-piece V-strap which gives the rider a more centered stance on the board, while eliminating the need for multiple row inserts.
